2021 IWAP CHARITY HELPS
Gifts for Residents at Domov svaté Rodiny
In 2021, IWAP continued its annual tradition of giving Christmas gifts to the residents of Domov svaté Rodiny. Residents told the staff what they wanted for Christmas and the list was sent to IWAP where generous members selected a resident(s), bought the gift they wanted and gift wrapped it. Thanks to Jenny Rassaby and Denise Kanyuh for receiving the gifts at their homes until the driver from Domov svaté Rodinycame to pick them up.
Domov svaté Rodiny is an adult residential facility, operated by Archdiocesan Charitas or Praha. They care for adults who have mental and combined disabilities. They strive to make life homelike with residents living in apartments. The members participate in its operation according to their abilities. When abilities allow, they regularly work in therapy workshops or in the kitchen.
The home cares for more than 70 people with a wide range of abilities, some are more independent, but most need constant assistance. They all need love, kindness and patience. Many residents have lived in the home for more than 10 years and several staff members have been there since its founding in 1991.
The home creates opportunities for people with mental disabilities to work, to maintain their physical and mental abilities and to have normal human contact with is important for their health. IWAP gifts enhance their Christmas. https://praha.charita.cz/sluzby/domovsvaterodiny/

Backpacks and phone chargers for young adults without homes.
2021, the third year IWAP bought Christmas presents for the young adults at Nadeje Bolzanova Day Center. This year generous members and friends donated 10 000Czk to buy backpacks and battery packs for twenty clients. This service center, near the Main train station, provides social services, showers, laundry and lunch to people under 26 who have no permanent home.
Phones are essential for the young people, they need them to contact agencies that provide overnight shelter, jobs and food as well as connecting with government agencies. Battery packs help keep the phones charged when they are unable to access electricity. Thank you IWAP Members!
Cash donations helped two Czech NGOs help people in need during the pandemic.
In 2021, IWAP made several donations to two Czech Charities serving people in need without stable homes. Místní místním was given around 162 000 Czk to buy food and hot drink vouchers during the cold months. And Jako doma, an agency serving vulnerable women was given 55 000 Czk worth of women’s underwear along with food and sanitary products. Generous members donated money on line and a fundraisers. We thank Mila and Eric Johnson for hosting an American Style 4th of July BBQ and Crystal Telecky for conduction two walking tours through historical Prague neighborhoods and Denise Kanyuh for organizing a Gin and Tonic evening.

Can you make a difference in the life of a homeless young person this Christmas by sponsoring backpacks and thermo bottles?
Homeless young people in Prague are particularly vulnerable during these pandemic times, particularly as the cold winter weather sets in. The general advice to stay home and to wash your hands is hard to follow for those who are sleeping rough, couch surfing or in crisis accommodation. Day services like Nadeje’s day center near Prague’s Hlavni Nadrazi have to be careful offering hot drinks, food, showers and other basics, and have had to limit their regular indoor services because of Covid. There are few places where homeless people can safely stay warm because gathering indoors in groups is not an option. Nadeje hopes to give out backpacks and thermoses so that their clients can carry around the things that they need to use throughout the day.
The clients of the Nadeje day center are young people under the age of 26, most of whom have grown up in dysfunctional families or children’s homes. Every client undergoes an interview with a social worker where goals are set (most often relating to job search, housing search, applying for a new ID card, assistance with dealing with employment agencies/offices, and also the fight against addiction to alcohol or drugs if this is an issue). If a client does not take any steps to improve his situation, Nadaje can stop the service, but they are always trying to solve problems in other ways, and to motivate them.
IWAP has been supporting the clients of Nadeje’s day center for a number of years, donating food, clothing, mobile phone cards and money for particular projects. During this festive season, we would again like to reach out and make a difference. IWAP will partner with Nadeje to provide practical gifts for their clients – new backpacks and thermo bottles – so that clients can carry warm drinks and clothing to keep warm outdoors.
Each gift package will cost 500CZK, and we hope to buy as many as possible. To join in this worthwhile initiative, please donate 500CZK (or multiples!) to IWAP’s Charity Account. The whole 100% of the money raised for this initiative will be directed to purchase of these useful gifts.

Naděje
Naděje runs a day program for people under 26 who are homeless, most of these people grew up in state care and have no family to turned to for help. Besides providing meals and washing facilities, they provide social services including counseling aimed at helping the young person integrate into society and find jobs.
In today’s society, a phone is essential in connecting with services, such as, government registrations, the job market, health care, overnight shelters, meals, counseling sessions, educational workshops, etc.
To help clients stay connected, IWAP donated 10 000 Czk to Naděje to cover the cost of holiday gift packs which contained power banks, sim cards and headphones, for their clients.
In the Spring, 60 pairs of new socks were donated with a value of 1700 CzK.
IWAP ladies made and donated sandwiches to the Naděje center during the year, value unknown.
