Mikuláš, Czech for St. Nicholas, is celebrated on December 5th. Mikuláš, represented as a bearded bishop, comes around to visit and judge children for how they behaved each year, along with two friends, an angel and a devil. If the children have been good, the angel gives them sweets or candy. But if they were bad, they get lumps of coal or hard potatoes and the devil threatens to put them in their sack and take them to hell. In order to escape this, the kids have to recite a poem or sing a song.
